Aerial Analytics: exploring emerging drone and imaging technologies

We are delighted to share the product of
Michael White’s 2024 LFA Fellowship

Michael White’s 2024 LFA Fellowship allowed him to explore the use of emerging drone and imaging technologies to monitor the performance of complex urban landscape planting projects.

Michael’s research merged data collected from drone-mounted multispectral cameras, with climate and soil data, to analyze plant performance of planting projects, and to validate it with ground surveys. His aim was to enable more detailed measurement of the success (and failure) of plant growth in large-scale green infrastructure projects to improve the performance of future plantings.

His final report documents Michael’s research and explains how this approach can be applied to new landscape planting projects. It represents evidence-led, practice-grounded innovation that the LFA Fellowship Program is proud to support.

Watch Michael discussing his Fellowship project with LFA Ambassador, Crosbie Lorimer.
