Measuring the benefits that projects deliver

The Landscape Foundation of Australia (LFA) is proud to support and direct the Landscape Performance Case Studies (LPCS) Program. This national program of applied research connects academic teams with leading design practices to assess the performance of completed urban landscape projects against their design goals.

Through this collaboration, each case study contributes to a growing collection of evidence-based assessments. Over time, this resource will inform more sustainable, health-supporting, and climate-resilient landscape design, planning, and management across Australia.

Upcoming Webinar:
Hear directly from the researchers & designers

Join us for a free online webinar as the first two LPCS project teams share their key insights, findings, and reflections on the research process. The session will feature brief presentations followed by an open Q&A.

  • Date: Wednesday, 17 September 2025

  • Time: 12:00 – 1:00pm AEST

  • Online | Free | 1 AILA CPD point

  • AILA members and non-members welcome

  • Recording available 72 hours after the event

The webinar is delivered in association with our supporting partner, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA).

Featuring two AILA award-winning projects

This webinar showcases two LPCS-funded case studies—each evaluating a high-profile landscape designed by Australian practices and recognised with AILA awards:

  • Monash University Southern Precinct Landscape

    Design by: ASPECT Studios

Research by: RMIT Landscape Architecture led by Dr Jock Gilbert

  • Curtin University Exchange Precinct

    Design by: REALMstudios

Research by: Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute (CUSP) led by Professor Peter Newman

These collaborations have explored sustainability outcomes—environmental, social, cultural and economic—to help better understand and confirm how built landscapes perform.

Looking ahead: 2026 LPCS Program Announcement

The Landscape Performance Case Studies (LPCS) Program is one of LFA’s key activities under our ‘Investing in Knowledge’ priority. Through this Program, we are contributing to the evidence base needed to make the case for sustainable landscape planning, design and ongoing management.

The Program aims to bridge the gap between academic research and design practice in Australia for the benefit of all involved.

LFA funds academic researchers and student research assistants for up to $10,000 to collaborate with design practices.

Information about the upcoming 2026 LPCS Program will be shared during the webinar. This is an excellent opportunity for academics and practitioners alike to learn more about participating in the next round of this important national initiative.
